Which Countries Have A Reciprocal Healthcare Agreement With Australia

Participating countries also enjoy the benefits of our public health system when they visit Australia, the costs as well as the person`s country of origin. In this way, Australia has agreements with countries whose health systems are very close to ours and which share about the same number of visitors between the two countries. RHCAs have incredible benefits for participating countries, but they are still not considered as comprehensive as travel insurance. There are 11 countries that have reciprocal health agreements: Italians need a valid Italian passport and either a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) with the initials IT or an Italian health insurance card or legal declaration. They are covered by Medicare for a period of 6 months from the date of their arrival in Australia or until the expiry of their visa, EHIC or Italian health insurance card – whichever comes first. To enroll in Medicare, visitors to the Netherlands need a valid Dutch passport and either their European Health Insurance Card with the initials NL or valid proof of insurance with Dutch health insurance. Note: Reciprocal health agreements with the following countries were terminated in 2016: Reciprocal Healthcare Agreements (HICAs) allow citizens of certain countries to receive subsidized health services for basic medical treatment during a visit to Australia. Even dual citizens should be careful when relying on international health services. In many countries, dual citizenship does not mean that you automatically have access to national services such as health care, especially if you do not pay taxes to that particular country.
